What man, eh?” “Come man, eh.” “Tell man, eh,” still rings in the air some times. “You only”, “then only”, “giveaa”, “yessaaa” were often corrected at home by parents, but we didn’t let go. That was how we spoke. Back in the ’80s, there was little pressure to be smart. And so, in our naïve ways, we believed what our classmates told us. We couldn’t come home and Google, you see.
I still remember in my school days we were collecting pencil shavings to make something out of it. I guess, to make “scent rubber” (the perfumed eraser). Our notebooks were full of those shavings, our bags were full of that. But we never would make it, eventually. Showing off collectibles was our greatest source of entertainment those days. So, classmates would flaunt a new pencil box, mostly of that magnet variety, which only some would have, a new sketch-pen. We would take out the refill once the ink was about to get over, and press the refill hard to get any ink left on to the paper! ..Soon, such trifles were glossed over. We were growing up. Maybe, when we were in the fifth or sixth standard, the next new wave had begun. Collecting stamps…. But, collecting stamps was an all-consuming madness. The deal was: two less important stamps for one rare stamp. This deal would constantly happen, at lunch break, between classes, during class. Much politics, many complaints, much anger, several fights would follow.
Soon, high school was just round the corner. And from there, it was the beginning of the end of the simple, carefree life. Rajiv Gandhi was killed, the USSR disintegrated, Sunil Gavaskar and Viv Richards had retired, the markets opened, and life changed forever.

"Monday Blues" ..is it real??
I am sure many of you are aware of the term “Monday Blues”. I always wondered what exactly is Monday blues??, could it be that people get too sick for all the things that they do during the weekend that they turn blue on Monday or is that people are tired of facing a new working week that they feel “blue”. I guess many of you will definitely agree on the second option.
To be very frank, I never experienced this when I was doing my college. Only when I started working, I realized the importance of this term. Good example of “Monday blues” can be seen in office elevators on Monday mornings….. where, everyone is tense and serious about their work that they don’t even bother to greet you. I am sure many of you have lot more examples like this…..Easy ways to overcome Monday blues are to anticipate your Monday morning on Friday afternoon. Clean up your desk and leave yourself a to-do list to make Monday morning a little more tolerable. Trust me….this funda works…. because the very first thing on my to-do list after coming to the office was to write a blog …and I did that..:-)

SUPER 30
Few days back I was reading an article about SUPER 30. I am sure many people are aware of it by now, for those who aren’t, it is a highly ambitious educational program running under the banner of "Ramanujan Society of Mathematics". It hunts for 30 meritorious talents from among the economically backward sections of the society and shapes them for India's most prestigious institution – the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The good thing about this program is that it targets students from extremely poor families. I think UPA government in India should consider this as a good example in setting up educational needs for poor students rather than increasing the quota.
I seriously don’t understand the logistics of the quota system in India. At least in my opinion, the quota system should be based more on economic class rather than caste system.

Procrastination is the Mother of all Screw-ups
I had a very busy week, thanks to the word “Procrastination”. I have this bad habit of postponing stuff... One classic example of this is that I got my W-2 forms sometime in January this year and the last date to submit the tax returns was in April. Until second week of April, I didn’t even bother to open my tax papers from the sealed envelop. Every time I saw those papers in my bag, I thought “there is still a lot of time to file the tax returns, why worry now”….believe it or not, I had to file for an extension (tax returns) this year.
U can imagine now, sitting in my office, I am typing this blog…. keeping all other important office work on my desk. I am sure from this, u guys have no problem in judging my priorities… which, I am gonna discuss in my next posting
